Throughout Southern Africa, the rhinoceros is called by a name that means the struggler, the endurer, the determined one. A fitting name as it is estimated that there are fewer than 6,000 black rhinos remaining in the wild.
The critically endangered black rhinos’ last stand may be in north-western Namibia which hosts the only free-roaming population of the species.
This Black Rhino portrait was created using a technique similar to scratchboard, where the black area is scraped away with sharp tools to reveal the white of the paper beneath.
